CHERRYHILL ORCHARDS

Cherryhill Orchards is a masterplan and detail design for tourism, display and administration buildings for a cherry orchard. Adjacent to the Yarra River in an area rich in rural and indigenous history, the conceptual design references native birdlife and the ground itself overlaid with topographical references as ordering devices. The site is on well drained soil on gentle slopes both sides of a mineral rich floodplain. The site is located along the section of Maroondah Highway where it turns to face due east directly towards the local hills of Mt Richie, Mt Donna Buang, Mt Tanglefoot and Mt St Leonard to the north, the masterplan is designed around capturing these key views.

The main compenents of the masterplan; Plaza, Main Building, Administration Building, Packing Shed and Wetlands, together with vehicle and pedestrian movement networks, were developed and resolved to work in harmony with the datum of the site and to separate public and private networks, with view corridors and connection to landscape the drivers.

Architectural elements include large oversailing roofs and the repetition of the pergola structure casting deep and dappled western shade. The rammed earth represents both tradition and a connection to place – comprised “of the earth” yet expressed in a contemporary way.
